In addition to the giggles that 4/20 induces (both for readers and participants), today was, of course, the announcement of the 2009 Pulitzers, prompting everyone in the journalist and artist community to remark with glee and enthusiasm: "Oh. That was today? That's cool, I guess," and proceed to promptly forget about it.
But who, I defy you, hasn't been blown away in the past year by the Breaking News Photography of Patrick Farrell, the General Non-Fiction of Douglas A. Blackmon, or the dark horse favorite for Local Reporting by Ryan Gabrielson and Paul Giblin of the East Valley Tribune of Mesa, Arizona? Once again, I defy you!
And, to little surprise, Lynn Nottage's Ruined won for Best Play, and you can still catch it at the MTC.
If you haven't seen it, treat yourself to David Cote's delightfully sardonic piece for The Guardian (too racy for American audiences, Time Out NY?), a step-by-step guide to writing a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Although he goes a bit easy on the award, to my mind, it's classic funny and, sadly, accurate satire. Always fun to see David's writing outside TONY; tremendous stuff. (And, for all you ironists out there: take delight in Cote's praise for the piece in huge font on the MTC's homepage. I love the theatre microcosm!)
